In the Fall of 2011 Emily became a member of a small nonprofit group called HACDC, a makerspace serving the Washington D.C. community of engineers, artists, tinkerers and programmers all motivated to improve the world by creatively rethinking technology. Emily quickly became interested in teaching fine art and design in order to bridge the communication and conceptual research perspective gap between herself and the many programmers and engineers she encountered at the space. The first portion of the course was six weeks of manual fine art instruction where students learned basics of visual design composition, controlling the page and exploring material potential in markmaking. The second part of the course will move into the digital realm and conceptualize an interior architectural intervention within the hackerspace.
